Google’s stuff lacks the usability of Yahoo’s services, the “intimate connection in usability” Yahoo has with its users.
Comparing usage of Yahoo’s email and instant messaging versus those from Google. Yahoo has a big edge in email users, with 249 million. Gmail has picked up 60 million users.
On the Instant desktop messenger side, Yahoo’s 77.9 million users are well ahead of Google Talk’s 3.4 million. The typical Internet user needs a good usability experience to go along with the functionality.
Also check the previous post on difference between yahoo and Google.
You can also check the other search engines like AskX.com which concentrates well on usability giving a lot of options.

You search any keyword in Yahoo,
You get the results, now go to cache link of the result and you will find the keyword getting highlighted on the page.
I ve seen it for the first time yesterday evening. Yahoo still not showing a cache date, but the words in the search term are now highlighted in bold, bright colors.

Google highlights any search query you Google and see the cache link.

Ask.com also does that and Live.com does not highlight the searched key phrase and that is very interesting.

It is a good indication of keyphrase proximity in the eyes of search engines. I did the search on a small search engine like entireweb, altavista.

Entireweb has Archived instead of cache leading to Internet archive of the site.

I have also seen two interesting links under each result in entireweb.com i .e. More from the host and speedy view. Checking both these features for one site lead me to the same page.

Jyve, the world’s first “web 2.0 live ask engine,”(probably the first web2.0 search engine) is more targeted than Googling, and more interactive than Ask.com and more helpful than asking “guides” with no interest in a topic, Jyve creates live conversations between people with self-defined common interests for live help and technical peer support.

Jyve believes real people know lots of things that aren’t easily found on the Web. Jyve offers live access to people and what they know, a means of quickly connecting with someone who has the exact information you need or knows right where to find it.”

Any user can use Jyve to get live “how to” information, assistance with Web searches and tips and advice on everything from what type of laptop to buy (and how to configure it) to learning languages, cooking, mountain biking, etc.

How It Works

When visitors to www.jyve.com type in questions, notices are instantly sent to the desktops of logged-in members who have tagged the topic as one they are knowledgeable in. Members can then “Jyve live” by chatting on the Jyve site, or enter one-on-one conversations via IM or VoIP call. Those seeking answers can evaluate an “expert’s” Jyve profile before entering into private sessions or paid transactions.

Jyve’s Success story

Jyve was founded as an award-winning plug-in for Skype users and quickly attracted a grassroots community of 30,000 members in 50 countries worldwide. Jyve was recently included in Skype’s Extras 3.0 suite and continues to bring members of the Skype community together to share information. As the world’s first “live ask engine,” Jyve extends the use of free, Web-based communications to eclipse static search tools.

About Jyve

Jyve was founded in 2004 to bring the knowledge stored in peoples’ minds worldwide online. Based in San Francisco and privately held, Jyve offers members the opportunity to build presence, credibility and business networks online with no upfront costs, and gives manufacturers and service providers a means of extending “peer support” to customers without adding internal resources. Jyve holds two provisional patents for “productizing knowledge” & metering time using Voice-over-IP and Instant Message (IM).

We have seen that there were recent improvements, new features from other search engines too like yahoo suggestion boards and AskX.com and ofcourse the custom vertical search engines that anyone create from Google or Swicki who are already in the search engine war.

I keep using all these search engines and their services, features at different times for different topics. Your comments are most appreciated.

Google like Ask.com is giving a new option of note this option which enables the users, webmasters to note some important points about the sites they visit in the Google’s search engine ranking pages.

All the notes will be saved as snippets along with description, title, url in the Google Notebook.

The interesting feature is that all notes of one particular topic are saved at one particular place.

Whether you search after you have logged in with any google account or not, you can always use this option to keep a note of the changes, updates of your favourite and interesting websites.

There are several other options of sharing it with your friends and Google gives a search option to even search for others notebooks..Is’nt there any privacy? Yet from What Google is doing, it is quite evident that participating with Google is easy in terms of search. I have already pointed out that Google is always targeting the most relevant page.. This is another example of Google’s success mantra.

Some of the quality signals that are unlikely to be found in free directories as per the Industrial strength and survival, are listed below.

1. If the directory is a clone of other directories, forget it.
2. Is the directory a niche authority? – answer can be found by checking the quality of backlinks from the same industry.
3. Traffic evidence of the directory – how robust is this evidence – maybe in the future this can help if the directories start using the yahoo site explorer badge or the google webmaster tools link analysis tool which can give good Input about the link growth and thus giving an indication in the growth of the traffic. Maybe a search on “web directory” or “submit url” give an indication of a directory traffic. Not sure about this/ as it depends on SERP placement.
4. Is the directory providing a good description of the existing sites or simply giving the links?
5. Does the directory give a good navigational path in reaching the right page for submission or
does the directory provide the good search option of finding the relevant websites of your industry.
6. Does the category of your directory submission indexed in the search engines? Is it supplemental result or in the main index?
7. Does the directory have quality sites or all the scraper sites?
8. Do the directory pages load fast?
9. How fat is the directory – depends on how frequently it is accepting the submissions.
10. Is the directory a “any site submission accepted” directory- rates the quality score from good sites and spam sites.
11. Pagerank – check this info about high pagerank
12. I do not recommend those promotional directories when you look into any website.- They are only present there for promotion- if they are really good directories then they should qualify to the above factors to my knowledge.
13. 302 redirects some non relevant page when you click on a link in the directory.
14. having nofollow or hiding the links with javascript.
15. Is the directory in a network of directories having the same display- can only be identified by experience.
16. No quality directory would ask for reciprocal links. If they do, means they are desperate in joining those directories which are already qualified as quality directories.
17. Many directories ask for email address. Do they use it for spam?– keep checking your email address to filter out the bad directories. No quality directory would require your email address for promoting themselves with email marketing or promotions. They dont ask your email address if you look into it in long-term basis.
18. Now do the paid directories follow the 17. point?
19. Followed the above points? now you did a link exchange with this.. so the question is how much impact that directory backlink has on your traffic?
20. Are the directory internal pages cluttered ONLY with adsense ads?
21. What happens when search engines die all of sudden.. Are you sure you will get the traffic?(–funny idea–)
22. Is the page where you are going to submit is recently cached? – still a good indication of search engine crawling that site.
23. Do the directories send you mail about why they have rejected your site?
24. Got a few quality directories, did a search in the search engines, check the related or similar pages in google, check the other directories listed- indication of quality directory from search engines- if you are doubtful- repeat the above listed step-by-step process.
List of many points above- Any other suggestions are welcome.
